The Wisp, Edinburgh and Midlothian – Concept Development and Masterplan

The strategic concept for this innovative project was driven by a number of factors. There was an existing consented development of Care home and Private hospital for the site. This was used as the basis for developing a more sustainable care village concept. It was also viewed in the context of the development sites at the adjacent Edmonstone Estate which was also then consented for a Care Home and Private Hospital, along with the huge scale of development at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary site and adjacent Bio Quarter. NHS Lothian’s aspirations to have the Edinburgh Royal campus recognised as a world leader in healthcare excellence is supported by the development of the Bio Quarter.

The proposed care village concept included a range of facilities – supported retirement living, warden supported sheltered housing, 80 bed care home and local village centre with retail, cafe and pharmacy – all on an elevated site that enjoys long distance views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
