Core Associates’ strategic thinking and masterplanning bring a unique skillset to the events industry. Through this we are able to provide insight into the early-stage development of events.
Our knowledge and understanding of operational aspects of major events allows us to ensure the design is successful from the outset and carried through to delivery. We have extensive experience planning and advising organising committees as well as turnkey suppliers and site operations for many major events overseas and here in the UK.
For the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, we assisted the Overlay Design Lead and Cluster Design Leads in the design process. We produced design drawings and ensured compliance with legislation. We coordinated design information between contractors and suppliers, undertook venue visits and validation of design information against site conditions. We also project managed venues.
We were involved in several venues in Birmingham, of particular note was the Coventry Arena. This was a multi-sport venue for Judo and Wrestling, which meant we had two rotating transitions overnight as we went from one sport to the other. This required resizing scaffolding, re-matting and reassembling stairs etc. The challenge was the time constraint and the logistics required for so many people safely working on different tasks on the same site simultaneously.
We worked directly with the Organising Committee in the planning stages, working closely with the Overlay Cluster Managers. We also provided the Health and Safety review of several venues including setting up the risk management drawings and registers.
We undertook a peer review of venues which encompassed buildability and commodity reviews. During the venue build and during Games time, we worked directly with the Organising Committee providing site support for the installation of Arena Overlay and Games time site overlay management. When it was all over, we provided site support for the de-rig of the Overlay and venue re-instatement.
Our Turnkey Supplier support included the co-ordination of the statutory approvals process for 2 of the 3 venue clusters. We were involved in reviewing turnkey suppliers proposals for key venues, the submission of statutory approvals and the co-ordination of responses with local authorities. We also conducted site reviews and inspections to obtain approvals.
The Birmingham Games involved approximately 6,500 athletes and team officials from 72 nations and territories in a 12-day celebration of sport and culture. Events took place across Birmingham and the West Midlands, entertaining more than one million ticketed spectators and reaching a global broadcast audience of more than one billion. We are proud of our involvement and Core Associates continues to support the Events industry at major events overseas and in the UK.
